  • It’s International Women’s Day, and we’re shining a light on one of student worker Zainah Masri’s recent additions to our Staff Picks tree: Fairuz in America, a 1972 LP released by Capitol Records as part of their International Series. [LP 795404] ⁣
⁣
The album contains songs by the Raḥbānī Brothers, ʻĀṣī and Manṣūr, that Fairuz (born Nouhad Wadie' Haddad, November 20, 1934) recorded in Beirut following her first tour of Canada and the United States in 1971, which showed North American audiences what those in Lebanon and throughout the Arabic-speaking world already knew. @fairuzrahbani #internationalwomensday #fairuz #fairuzinamerica #staffpicks #listenwider #millsmusiclibrary
  • The Maggie Cousin Quartet plays 5-7pm the first and fourth Saturday every month at Café CODA for the Millennial Jazz series. They’re all @uwmadisonschoolofmusic students, and we employ 3/4 of the group: Maggie Cousin, alto saxophone/flute, Meredith Nesbitt, bass, and Lily Finnegan, drums—Sean Lloyd, guitar, might end up working at Mills one day soon. Here’s a clip of them from this evening performing “Blue Fin,” a composition by Lily Finnegan. @cafecodamadison @maggie_cousin_music @nesbitt_meredith @lil_g_finn #maggiecousinquartet #maggiecousin #meredithnesbitt #lilyfinnegan #seanlloyd #millsmusiclibrary
  • We are getting more newly published titles as e-books these days, but we continue to receive plenty of print books for you to peruse and use! The 2019 publications continue to arrive, too. ⁣

Decentering Musical Modernity: Perspectives on East Asian and European Music History, edited by Tobias Janz and Chien-Chang Yang. Bielefeld: Transcript, 2019. [ML330.5 .D43 2019] @transcript_verlag ⁣
⁣
Tobias Janz, Chair of Musicology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, and Yang Chien-Chang, Associate Professor and Director of the Graduate Institute of Musicology at National Taiwan University, write in their Preface that this collection of essays “is meant to be a contribution to a global history of music that considers universalism—from which neither the European concept of music nor the European concept of history can (or should) be completely released—as a problem and not as a matter of course.” ⁣
⁣
From the publisher: “This collection investigates the concept of modernity in music and its multiple interpretations in Europe and Asia. Through contributions by both European and Asian musicologists it discusses how a decentered understanding of musical modernity could be matched on multiple historiographical perspectives while attentive to the specificities of local music and their narratives in Asia and Europe. The essays connect local, global and transnational history with sociological theories of modernity and modernization, making the volume an important contribution to overcoming the Eurocentric dichotomy between western music and world music within the field of historical musicology.” #decentering #decenteringmusicalmodernity #decenteringdominantnarratives #musicalmodernism #historicalmusicology #millsmusiclibrary ⁣
  • Professor Laura Schwendinger holds her Composition Masterclass in our seminar room on Wednesday afternoons, and we sometimes find writing on the chalkboard on Thursdays. Today we found these musical cryptogram examples. We’re not sure what was going on here. Perhaps someone is composing a piece to address the seriousness of public health emergencies? Cryptograms are so often used merely to incorporate a composer’s name, or to pay tribute to a composer’s influence. Perhaps we’ll find out next Wednesday. #musicalcryptogram #foundonchalkboard #viralmusic #millsmusiclibrary
  • Nate Gibson returns to the DJ seat this week for Circulating Sounds, our weekly radio show on WSUM 91.7 FM Madison, airing noon-1 (CST) every Thursday and streaming live via wsum.org @wsum91.7 ⁣
⁣
For this week’s show, Nate will be highlighting our extensive 78 rpm record collection. Those super old, fragile, shellac discs that pre-date LPs and 45s, are the earliest kinds of flat discs that we know as records. They’re called 78s because they spin at 78 revolutions per minute, though prior to 1930, there was no standard speed, so they were often meant to play at 70 or 71.29, or 76.59, or 80 rpm. For the sake of ease we call them all 78s. We have more than 100,000 78s in our collection, spanning from the 1890s to the late 1950s, and they cover all sorts of musical and spoken word genres. We have particularly strong 78 collections of ethnic music, early jazz, Yiddish recordings, Paramount Records and other local Wisconsin labels. Nate is going to be playing a random assortment of his favorites.⁣
⁣
We don’t actually check out or loan our 78s, but we circulate them in other ways—such as streaming them via @uwdigitalcollections or playing them on the radio. We do have a 搜索able database of our 78s online, and if anybody wants to hear a specific record, we’ll be happy to provide a digital copy. #circulatingsounds #wsum #thesnakeonthelake #78rpm #78rpmrecords #78rpmcommunity #78s #wisconsinmusicarchives #millsmusiclibrary
  • Student worker Mike Hobson has been populating the Staff Picks tree recently as he continues to peruse our holdings. He started working here midway through last semester, after deciding to take a break from touring the world as a musician in order to attend @uwmadischool. He’s known by many as Mike “Spider” Hobson, or Spider Mike, but here he’s simply Mike. ⁣
⁣
He’s picked Dinah Jams, the 1955 album by Dinah Washington on EmArcy Records. [COMP DISC 31465] He writes: “Dinah Washington was the real deal. She could hang with the best in the business, and here she is in 1954 making it look easy with Clifford Brown, Clark Terry, Maynard Ferguson, Max Roach, and more! An amazing session! Check out the minor Latin take on ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin.’” This is a 1990 CD reissue, obviously. We also have the 1955 LP, should you wish to put it on your turntable or listen here on one of ours. #dinahwashington #dinahjams #emarcyrecords #staffpicks #millsmusiclibrary
